Xavier girls facing Boone for 1A title

PELLA – The rematch is set and it should be a dandy.

Gabi Fleming of Xavier will face freshman Maiya Phanchantraurai of Boone at No.1 singles when the two teams battle for the Class 1A state championship in girls tennis.

Last week, Fleming held off the precocious ninth grader 6-4-, 6-4 for her historic fourth title in the state singles competition in Waukee. This time, the senior and the freshman will clash for a critical point in the team event.

Xavier advanced to the state finals Monday with a 5-1 victory over Decorah in the quarterfinals and a 5-1 verdict over Central DeWitt in the semifinals. The championship match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. in Pella.

The Saints are seeking their third state title in a row.

Fleming, Gemma Younadam, Kelsey Weiss and Taylor Valenta won both of their matches Monday. Xavier cllnched both victories with five points in the six singles matches, so none of the doubles matches were played.
