Prairie rebounds in a big way

CEDAR RAPIDS — After back-to-back defeats, Cedar Rapids Prairie returned to the win column.

Senior quarterback Cael Kongshaug threw for 165 yards and four touchdown passes as the Hawks routed Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 70-0, in Prairie’s Homecoming game Friday night at John Wall Field.

“[This game] was awesome,” Prairie Coach Kyle Knock said. “We got our butts kicked last Friday and we had a lot of come-to-Jesus meetings this week about how we act and how we carry ourselves and how we come together as a team. Tonight, they played for each other and it was fun to see.”

Fresh off last week’s 47-0 loss to Waukee Northwest, Prairie (3-2) got sizable contributions from senior tailback Colt Hobson — who ran for two scores — and senior Drew Bennis, who returned two punts for touchdowns.

The Prairie defense also scored as sophomore defensive end Touissant Nkunzi sacked the Jefferson quarterback, stripped the ball away and returned the fumble 12 yards for a TD. The Hawks’ defense registered two total turnovers, three sacks turned away the J-Hawks twice on fourth down.

Prairie visits Dubuque Hempstead next Friday while Jefferson (1-4) hosts Dubuque Senior.
