Weiss sparkles as Saints down Warriors

CEDAR RAPIDS – Ty Weiss turned in another special performance for the Xavier Saints Friday night.

Weiss scored on a 64-yard punt return and sizzled on a 99-yard kickoff return as the top-ranked Saints defeated Cedar Rapids Washington, 42-14, at Saints Field for their 18th straight victory since the start of last year.

Dawson Doyle ran for a pair of touchdowns and finished with 101 yards on the ground in just 2 1/2 quarters of action with much of the second half played with a continuous clock and Xavier reserves on the field.

Cash Parks passed for 142 yards and connected with Connor Clark on a 73-yard pass where Clark caught a short pass in the flat, raced down the near sideline, got some key blocks and rambled into the end zone.

Xavier raised its records to 5-0 overall in the Class 4A district opener for both teams. Washington fell to 2-3.

The Saints grabbed a 35-0 cushion with six minutes left in the third quarter on that 73-yard TD play from Parks to Clark. Xavier Coach Duane Schulte substituted liberally at that point and Washington got on the board when star tailback Uweza Kalolero, bottled up all night by Xavier’s No.1 defensive unit, broke loose for a 29-yard touchdown.

The PAT by Logan Barton made it 35-7 and momentarily stopped the continuous clock, but that ended when Weiss caught the ensuing kickoff at the 1-yard line and used his speed, cutting ability and blocks to run the entire length of the field. Weiss kicked the PAT himself to make it 42-7.

Washington scored again when quarterback Bonfils Iranzi connected with Joshuan Howard in the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown late in the game.

Doyle broke loose for a 38-yard touchdown scamper in the first quarter to begin the scoring. He later tallied on a 7-yard run. Parks also scored on a 1-yard run.

Kalolero, one of the leading runners in Class 4A, finished with 93 yards. Iranzi passed for 129 yards.
