CENTER POINT — After four sets and roughly two hours of volleyball, nothing had been settled between a pair of WaMaC East powerhouses, Solon and Center Point-Urbana.

It would take another half-hour and 24 more points before the visiting Solon Spartans took a 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 15-9) marathon over Center Point-Urbana at the CPU Dog Pound.

It was back and forth throughout every set, and through the first four sets, most of the time, neither side could pull away far enough to gain momentum.

CPU battled back from an early 6-1 Solon lead in the first set, and the Spartans held a 20-18 lead late. But a couple of Brielle Trout blocks gave the Pointers a 21-20 lead, then Trout and Brynley Havel finished things off with kills for the 25-20 win.

In the second set, it looked as if CPU was in position to win it, up 18-15, but the Spartans went on a 10-3 run to close the set, 25-21, tying the match at one each.

The Pointers won the third set 25-19, and Solon would square things in the fourth to set up the first-to-15 tie breaker.

CPU had the set tied at 6-6 all, but Solon outscored the Pointers down the stretch, 9-3 to hold on for the win.

“Tough fought five sets,” said CPU head coach Michelle Havel. “Wish it would have gone our way. We felt it should have been our match, but it is how it is.”

The Spartans moved to 11-3 on the year, while CPU fell to 13-6.
