Marion rallies to trim Grinnell, 21-20
MARION – The Marion Wolves scored a touchdown on a 3-yard run by Tyler Pierce with 30 seconds left Friday night and rallied to edge Grinnell, 21-20, in a prep football game at Marion.
The Wolves trailed 20-7 with eight minutes left, but they pulled within 20-14 on a 3-yard run by Colton Taylor with 4:45 left and forced Grinnell to punt into the end zone.
Marion took over its own 20 and executed an efficient 2-minute drive to victory. Six different players either ran the ball or caught a pass on the winning march, including a reception by left tackle Elijah Dreyer on a tipped pass for a 20-yard gain for first-and-goal.
Pierce scored to make it 20-20, then freshman Grant Dreyer — Elijah’s younger brother — kicked the PAT for the lead.
Grinnell threw a Hail Mary pass on the final play but it did not succeed.
The Wolves were out-gained, 361-246, but found a way to improve their record to 2-5. Grinnell fell to 4-3.
Grinnell 13 0 0 7 – 20
Marion 0 7 0 14 – 21
