Chestnut wins, Kernels fall, 5-1
CEDAR RAPIDS – A season crowd might have seen a Cedar Rapids Kernels 5-1 loss to Wisconsin, but they also got chance to see a living legend.
Sold-out Memorial Stadium saw 4,626 fans come through turnstiles to watch baseball, but also to see the legendary eater, Joey Chestnut, who defeated pairs of local celebrities a kolache-eating contest.
Then there was baseball.
The Kernels (44-68) won the first three games of the six-game series against the Timber Rattlers, but Wisconsin bounced back with three victories in the last three games.
Danny DeAndrade belted his 12th home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth for Cedar Rapids to avoid a shutout. JP Smith had two hits for the Kernels.
Cedar Rapids opens a six-game series at Beloit Tuesday.
